  • e_ting around Sheung Wan

    After about 2 months in the area, I think I can officially say that contrary to popular belief, food is Sheung Wan's not that great. It's plentiful, yes, but none of them seem that great. I've yet to find a place to frequent, and thank goodness something inside me is stopping me from becoming a Cafe O regular. But what do I do? I'm starting to get bored with mediocre, same-same food

    There are indeed many established, old-school cha chaan teng kinda places in Sheung Wan, and usually, I LURVE old-school. But the fact that I've now been to so many of them in Sheung Wan without finding one I can recommend is leaving me a bit disillusioned.

    My best bet is still Lin Heung for dim sum, but it's a bit far and I can't have much dim sum on my own...

    Here's a recap of what I've had so far (by no means exhaustive, since I didn't take photos at every meal):

    Top L-R: Pork Chop Rice at For Gei; Sweet & Sour Pork on rice and soup of the day at Hip Shing; Laksa at Katong Laksa.
    Middle L-R: Smoked Salmon and Avocado sandwich at the Brunch Club;
    Duck at Palate; Panna Cotta at Palate.
    Bottom L-R: Sushi Set at Kiyotaki; Five Spice Chiuchow duck on rice at Chan Kan Kee.

    None are worth writing home about, unless maybe the sushi at Kiyotaki, helped by the fact that I was hung over and had a sushi craving - but mind you that thing you see there was HK$120 + 10%, a bloody fortune in Sheung Wan. I was also taken to a prawn noodle shop in Grand Millenium Plaza - unfortunately I can't remember what it's called (maybe just "Prawn Noodle Shop"??!). Couldn't dodge the chance to try a laksa, so I did, and it was good - reminded me of the sock-knocking laksa at Straits Cafe in good ol' Donny back in Melb... but I still miss the SC version *sobs*
