  • What I've been e_ting

I've been out a lot these past few weeks, but none of my meals have been spectacular. Totally forgot to take photos, but here's a brief list:

Gong guan - we booked ages ago and finally went on the night the Olympics started (and hence missed what will probably be the only Olympics opening ceremony held in 'our' country in my lifetime in favour of food - how typical). Food was okay, acceptable, but didn't blow my socks off - a fusion (god I hate that word) of Shanghainese, Suzhou-nese and Cantonese food. Quite decent for the price of about HKD $380 per person, no corkage charges etc.

Yachiyo ramen (that I've mentioned before)

Yau Gwat Hei (hot pot chain - not too exciting, really)
Causeway Bay/Wan Chai - figure it out yourself

Jade Garden - Standard Sunday dim sum spot with family.

For Kee - have I mentioned these guys before? They're a Sheung Wan gem. Tastiest HK-style pork chops ever. Their daily lunch specials are good too - just honest home cooking like minced pork and eggplant. Gets super full at lunchtime, so go early or late, or be prepared to wait (urgh, bad rhyme alert!)

Tutto - Italian resto by Habitu. Wasn't planning on going there - we wanted to go to Crystal Jade for dumplings next door, but they were packed. From this breeds my 'take next door's spillage' economic/business theory (For the record I was in Sha Tin to watch Sleepless Potatoes, a show with my local theatre fave Kearen Pang, who teamed up with my not-so-favourite ex-radio host Hyperbitch)

We had a mushroom risotto and 2 spaghetti pot pies between the three of us (I can't really explain the pot pie thing - guess we were feeling junky - I mean, this isn't much of a step up from Spaghetti House after all, is it?). Needless to say the pot pies were crap (had they run out of salt? Of stock? Of every possible condiment? Only the all-seeing kitchen eye will know...) The mushroom risotto only tasted of garlic... Went to detox at I-Scream, but having vivid memories of the gelati at Chocolat in Milan didn't help.

No photos of the food, but Tutto had this excruciatingly cute baby portrait on their wall...

Actually, I spent pretty much the whole weekend in Sha Tin - the day after the theatre show, I went to watch equestrian events - very fun. Starting time was 7.15pm, so naturally I was starving by the time I got there. While waiting to go through security I was praying desperately that the snack counter wouldn't be selling curry fish balls at $40 each... Ningning, ir Beibei, or one of the other freaky mascots must have heard me because they were selling popcorn at $8, icypops for $5 and chicken rice at $28!! Cheap junk! Right up my alley! We got so excited we bought a bit of everything and ended up feverishly sick...
